Over time my work has taken an experimental and multi-disciplinary approach to landscape sited on the boundary between the abstract and figurative.

My current practise explores landscape as a liminal space, a place of journeying, transformation and renewal. As I pass through a hollow way or sit tucked in and secure under a tree or hedgerow enjoying its rooty, earthy protectiveness I feel enveloped, safe and a strong sense of connection within myself and the natural world.

I am interested in art as a process, of mark making with sticks, stones and other found objects. Of pouring thin washes and rivulets of pigment onto a variety of surfaces including unprimed canvas and of the effects that are created as it soaks deeply into the material interacting with the other marks, mediums and colours already laid down. In an attempt to mimic the processes of nature I try to be as free as possible in my approach to application allowing the pigment to work in its own way like rain falling onto surfaces or sea washing over the sand leaving behind natural marks and traces.

Through layering materials I am able to create a sense of depth within my work inviting the viewer to step inside and share my experience of landscape as a refuge, a positive place to recharge and renew.
