Fernage - Small Studies in Green

Summer in Cornwall brings a thick covering of ferns across hedges, banks, woodlands and lanes. I’ve found myself repeatedly coming back to the word fernage - a fictional term that feels right for describing this moment. It suggests a sense of being surrounded by greenery, time, and stillness.
These small works on paper are a response to that idea. Fernage has become a way to think about landscape not just as a physical place, but as a mood, memory, or in-between space. The work explores that quiet, immersive feeling, surrounded by greens —where nature takes over and things slow down.
