Puddle Paintings - aka 'Mud & Water'

Mud and water were very much on my mind when I felt inspired to make these paintings. They are about material—the stuff of mud and the stuff of paint. I wanted to capture that feeling of something sludgy, squelchy, textured and visceral.
And, of course, there is colour, which is always an important starting point for me. I see it everywhere in nature, particularly in the many photographs I take on walks and runs.
Interestingly, this series became an exploration of complementary colour pairings: red and green, blue and orange, and finally yellow and violet. These relationships became a way of thinking about and playing with colour, while the physical qualities of mud and water found their way into the paint itself.
